Spiders - Did You Know?

Spiders
These eight-legged arachnids are one of the most easily identifiable arthropods out there. Even young children can tell you when they’ve spotted a spider. They vary significantly in appearance and size. Some spiders are smaller than half a millimeter while others grow to nearly a foot long. Their cephalothorax vary in color, markings, and hairiness. Nearly a third of Americans have a phobia of spiders. They are more than just a creepy-crawly from your nightmares. These guys are incredible hunters, skilled home builders, and proficient travelers.

Odd But True Spider Facts
Despite their distinct lack of wings, spiders have the amazing ability to travel by air for hundreds of miles. This is thanks to an act called ballooning, where spiders expend silk from their bodies, which carries them through the sky. Ballooning spiders look as though they are traveling with the wind, but scientists have discovered they use the atmosphere’s electric field.

As if flying on invisible planes of electricity wasn’t strange enough, jumping spiders can leap up to 50 times the length of their body. Comically, scientists have discovered that spiders are near-sighted, which makes all the long-distance traveling slightly concerning.

Spiders are devoted parents. Their females can lay up to 3,000 eggs at one time. Some mothers carry their babies on their backs to protect and feed them until they are old enough to venture out on their own. Other mothers make the ultimate sacrifice and lay their eggs despite it resulting in their death.

Are Spiders A Danger To Humans?
They certainly can be. Spiders like the Black Widow, Brown Recluse and Hobo Spider are all capable of inflicting injuries to humans that require a visit to the hospital. The bites of these spiders can have results ranging from necrosis of the skin to breathing difficulties. While these spiders get a bad reputation as being deadly to humans, they rarely cause life-threatening injuries. While their bites aren’t likely to cause death, it doesn’t mean you want to experience the pain or scarring associated with their bites.

All three of these spiders might be found in and around your home. Creepy as they may look, they aren’t on the hunt for human prey, but they do have a taste for something that loves to congregate around humans - bugs. The problem is the accidental disturbance of these arachnids often triggers defensive bites.

Spider And Web Removal
Having spiders in the home is also a nuisance. The buildup of webs is frustrating and unsightly. Often, they are hard to completely remove and quickly turn to cobwebs that build up thick coats of dust and allergens.

Some conventional methods for removing cobwebs are vacuuming, using an extendable duster, using a broom, and wiping them away with a cloth. These methods can be tiring and exhausting, depending on the height of the web. Sometimes a standard cobweb removal turns into a panic when you find a spider is still nearby. There is one sure fire method of web removal that At Ease Pest Control specializes in, and that is with routine pest control. Remove the spiders and no more webs. Spider infestations should be handled by professionals trained to find them, remove them, and help you keep them from returning.

Spiders Are A Sign Of Bigger Problems
What is truly concerning about finding spiders in your home, is that spiders migrate to follow food. So, if you see spiders in your home, that means there is something there for them to eat. Spiders can eat flies, mosquitoes, small roaches, silverfish, moths, and dozens of other types of insects that you do not want in your homes. Additionally, once your spider infestation gets large enough, larger predatory pests will be attracted to your home. These predators can include rats, Tarantula Hawks, larger spiders, scorpions, and some snakes.

When To Call An Exterminator
Spiders are a major red flag for your home. Whether you are dealing with dangerous spiders or otherwise, these pests need to be removed, and your home assessed immediately. A pest removal professional can do more than get rid of your spider problem. They can find out why the spiders are there, how they got in, and how to keep the infestation from happening again. You don’t want to wait until a few spiders turn into a hundred spiders, and a hundred spiders turn into thousands.

Here at At Ease Pest Solutions, we know the stress of pest infestations and work diligently to get you back relaxing in your home. We have service you can count on and professionals you can trust. If you are ready to tackle your spider infestation, call At Ease Pest Solutions today.
