Perhaps one of the oldest settled areas in North Carolina is Archdale. The city began as a Quaker settlement back in the 1680s. John Archdale arrived in Carolina in 1683 as a tax collector representing the Lord's Proprietors. They were the eight men who King Charles granted the Carolina charters.  In 1694, Archdale was named as Provincial Governor of Carolina. In his tenure, he avoided a war with the Native Americans and the Spanish and was one the most influential men of his time. Eventually, the area known as Bush Hill was renamed Archdale.

Today, the culturally diverse city has some unique attractions to keep visitors and locals entertained. The scariest and most famous is Kersey Valley Spooky Woods Haunted Attraction. In 2022, the place was ranked as the #8 scariest haunted house in the United States by Hauntworld.com. For nearly 40 years, the site has been creating new and innovative ways to scare guests. For an experience like no other, pay a visit to Kersey Valley Bomb Bowling. The game combines cornhole, football, horseshoes, and bowling. The game is set up like cornhole, but players try to knock down ten pins instead of aiming at the hole. The fun starts before the game begins with a match of rock, paper, and scissors to decide who goes first.

If you are looking for a place to play and relax, you may want to plan for an extended stay. At Creekside Park, you can get your heart rate up with a game of sand volleyball, basketball, or tennis and then cool down on the walking trails. Slower-paced action is what disc golf is about, and the park has an 18-hole course. You can take it down a notch with a picnic or all the way with a stop at the Little Free Library. Unique to the park is the orienting course. All you need is a smartphone or a compass and a course map, and you can test your navigating skills over various terrains.

You can find a more traditional game at the Holly Ridge Golf Links. The picturesque course was home to the 2022 Dogwood Junior Boys' Championship. If the idea of indoor golf is for you, the Bunker Lounge has six golf simulators. While smacking the ball, grab a great bite to eat at the Bar & Grill. More serious golfers can take lessons and work on their short game. The outdoor facility is a sight to behold and a great place for a wedding or special event.
