Bowling Green

Bowling Green, South Carolina

Bowling Green, SC

Although Bowling Green is most-often associated with the University named after the Ohio town, a historic site of the same name sits in South Carolina. York County’s version might not be as famous, but the city is dedicated to conserving and honoring its history.

The Bowling Green marker erected in 1978 by the Marion County Historical Society commemorates a moment in the Revolutionary War. On June 8th, 1782, the marker details, a treaty signed at Burch’s Mill on the Pee Dee River ended partisan warfare and 500 loyalists or more laid down their arms. There are several other markers within a five-mile span as well. Although many of those are modern, one, erected in 1903, is a monument titled “To the Dead and Living Confederate Soldiers.”  The Veteran’s Monument nearby was built for those who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

The Ebenezer Church marker explains that the Methodist Meeting House, built in 1856 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a replica of an 1855 building that burned down. Another reminds passersby of the Marion Depot, built in 1908. The Old Town Hall and Opera House, built in 1892, is also on the Historic Places register.

Bowling Green sits extremely close to the border with North Carolina, making quick getaways to places like Crowders Mountain State Park and Gastonia easy. That being said, there’s plenty to enjoy on the south side of the border as well. Kings Mountain State Park has beautiful hiking trails, two lakes for fishing, and several Revolutionary War sites marked in the Kings Mountain National Military Park.

If you’re the type to hold a competitive edge, check out Clover Bingo. If you’re looking for good family fun, this might not be the spot for you. The Bingo Hall prohibits kids 10 and under from going in so the adults can keep serious about their game.

A place that does offer family fun is Indigo Trails Farm, which focuses on nature, sustainability, and specialty fresh-cut flowers. Its U-Pick flower garden lets you bring your own vase, then pay by volume. There’s also a farm stand where you can get pre-made bouquets, goat’s milk soap and farm-fresh eggs.

Of course, South Carolina is also well-known for its fantastic food, and there’s no shortage around Bowling Green. If you spend the day enjoying the baseball fields, walking trail, or disk golf course at New Centre Park, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from Courtney’s BBQ and Seafood, a joint that’s been serving up delicious plates since 1999. The establishment now has a curbside grocery stand where visitors can have their fresh meats and produce brought out to their car. If you think staying in business since 1999 is an impressive feat, you’ll be even more wowed by Eagle’s Nest Restaurant, which has been delighting customers with hearty sandwiches and burgers, plus Southern classics and made-from-scratch desserts since 1975.
