Filbert, South Carolina, is not so much a town these days as it is a rural neighborhood in York County. Indeed, it is so small that it was disincorporated and annexed by its neighboring communities long ago. But although separate demographics no longer exist for Filbert, its road signs are still there along U.S. Highway 321, and there is still plenty of hometown pride amongst its citizenry. To them, Filbert will always be Filbert, with an identity that cannot be erased as easily as a zip code. It is a lovely, peaceful, friendly, and historic hamlet in many ways.

Filbert’s greatest claim to fame is perhaps best-selling African-American novelist Dori Sanders, born and raised here. Her family’s legacy lives on and continues to draw countless tourists to the region every year. The Sanders family farms are the oldest African-American-owned farms in the South and are world-famous for their amazing peaches.

Of course, many other attractions throughout York County are worthy of your time. You won’t want to miss the Historic Brattonsville Culture & Heritage Museums. They feature 800 acres of Southern culture to explore, complete with Revolutionary War reenactments, gorgeous hiking trails, historic buildings, and even a working farm with cute animals to interact with.

History buffs love the Catawba Cultural Center as well. So often, we forget that our region was home to many indigenous peoples long before our first European ancestors even arrived. The Catawba Indians were highly skilled farmers in Filbert before the Sanders family even thought about planting their first peach, and they were incredible artists, too.
