Fort Mill, South Carolina is one of the fastest growing communities in the state. With a population of 17,557, this town is located in the northeast county of York, on the borders of the Catawba River and North Carolina. Because it’s only 20 miles to Charlotte, North Carolina, Fort Mill is called a suburb of Charlotte. History of Fort Mill
Originally, the Fort Mill area was home to the Catawba Indians. During the early 1700’s it was settled and called “Little York” and later changed to “Fort Hill.” The name Fort Mill was chosen when it became a British fort and grist mill. In1887, the Fort Mill Manufacturing Company was created. Fort Mill became a major textile manufacturing town. Over the next 100 years, the company stayed in Fort Mill, expanding its business. Then in 2006, the company merged with Brazilian Textiles, becoming Springs Global. Today Springs Global is headquartered in Brazil. In 2019, Fort Mills is home to CompuCom, CitiGroup, Britax Child Safety, Shutterfly, Wells Fargo, Honeywell, and Muzak.

Mild Climate
Summers in Fort Mill are warm and humid. Temperatures in the low 90's make July the hottest month, which is cooler than most places in South Carolina. Early spring and fall are the most enjoyable months with temperatures ranging from the 70’s to the low 80’s. Overall, Fort Mill has a mild climate compared to other towns in South Carolina. 

Summer Activities
Because of its warm summer weather, Fort Mill offers all kinds of outdoor activities for residents and visitors. Anne Springs Close Greenway has canoe or kayak rentals for any of the four lakes. The Greenway also has a recreation center, many nature trails, Native American and animal displays, and venues available for weddings or parties. Twisted Beaver River Adventures is a river outfitter that rents out canoes, kayaks or inner tubes to explore the Catawba River. Hiking, fishing, and swimming are also fun summer activities. And, a visit to the Fort Mill area wouldn’t be complete without a stopover at Carowinds Amusement Park. It’s 400-acre theme park’s rides are based on various Carolina themes with 64 rides,13 roller coasters, and 7 water rides. Fort Mill also has many restaurants, cafes, and charming stores to explore.
