Granite Quarry, North Carolina

Granite Quarry, NC

The small town of Granite Quarry, North Carolina, may have less than three-thousands residents, but that hasn’t stopped it from leaving its mark. Granite cut from the quarry has been exported to countries worldwide, especially the pink rock for which the town is known.

The most famous spot in the city is the Michael Braun House, better known as the Old Stone House. Built in the late 1750s, it is the oldest dwelling in Rowan County and one of the oldest in the Piedmont area. Braun took over seven years to build the two-story colonial for a good reason. The house is made from over 3500 tons of granite cut from the local quarry. After being abandoned for nearly fifty years, the Rowan Museum bought the place in 1959, restored it, and opened it as a tourist attraction in 1966. On September 28th, 1971, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house is open to the public from April through November if you’re in the area.   Also in the register is the Granite Quarry School, built in 1933.

One visitor to the Old Stone House is otherworldly. One resident reported seeing a pale old woman sitting by the creek. Two days later, an obituary ran in the paper for an old woman from the family line who owned the house.

For a relaxing day, head on over to Granite Lake Park. The one-acre Lake is open for boating and fishing, or try your luck on one of the fishing piers. There are also two designated walking trails. Take in the sights on the almost one-mile Granite Lake and Centennial Nature Trail Loop. The walk takes about fifteen minutes and elevates almost 20 feet at some points.

The annual Christmas at the Lake is a community can’t miss. Join Santa and the Grinch at the toy drive for homeless children. The Christmas Market is great for last-minute gifts and local crafts. The Festival of Trees showcases the decorations of local businesses and civic associations.

Residents take pride in displaying their Christmas light skills and can win the city-sponsored lighting contest. If you see a house that amazes you, you can nominate it here. The city also has a Yard of the Month contest to enhance the sense of community further. From April-September, two winners are chosen monthly.

At the heart of most small towns is a place for some down-home cooking. In these parts, Cagney’s Kitchen fits the bill. Stop in and choose from Granite Quarry’s unique menu, with breakfast all day, Mediterranean specials, and savory steaks. After dinner, Sno Biz of Granite Quarry is the place to grab some cold treats. Try one of the over one hundred and eighty flavors of shaved ice.
