Harmony, NC

The town of Harmony, North Carolina, may have the first documented dating site. No, not a website but the site where Harmony Elementary School now sits. The Harmony Hill Camp Meeting was an annual two-week revival that was attended via covered wagons, and attendees set up tents and cooked over open fires. The meeting was no ordinary spiritual get-together; many men and women would meet their future wives or husbands here for the 1st time. The first meeting occurred in 1846 and is still held annually in October.

The 600 residents make up the close-knit community and enjoy many local events. In 2015, the town joined the multi-state event “Take a Break from the Interstate.” The 3-day Road Market is at the end of July and spans 100 miles of historic Route 21. Hundreds of residents, shops, and vendors hold yard sales, flea markets, and community events. You can find amazing crafts, local-made products, artwork, collectibles, and down-home Southern specialties. Who knows what kinds of treasures you can find? You can register here if you want to participate and be a seller.

For a fun weekend with the environment in mind, you’ll want to attend the Carolina Jubilee. While sustainable farming is at the heart of the event, don’t be fooled, the weekend is fun and music-filled. Over 20 local and national bands perform, and you can sample the culinary delights from many farm-to-table restaurants. Participating vendors also include vineyards, distilleries, and breweries. The kid zone area has a hay bale maze, corn pit, and many games and activities. For a unique dining experience, don’t miss the Urban Soul Dinner. Over ten chefs and mixologists prepare a multi-course, family-style email. The tables are shared, so you may end up making some new friends.

The Jubilee is held at VanHoy Farms & Campgrounds. You can stay on the grounds while attending one of the area’s many concerts and festivals. Amenities include hiking trails, basketball courts, RV hookups, hot showers, and an outdoor swimming pool. The longest-running and most historical event is the Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention. What started as a fundraiser by H.P. VanHoy and attended by 200 or so people became nationally known and had over 100,000 attendees at its peak. The farm is still owned and operated by H.P VanHoy’s grandson.

Hunting Creek Preserves is the place for the area’s bird hunters. Here you can take your shot at Pheasant, Chukar, and Quail on over 2000 acres of prime hunting grounds. Guided hunts include a guide and dog and cleaning and packing up your bounty. Sit around the fireplace and swap hunting tales in the newly renovated 15,000-square-foot lodge. There is a 13-station clay course and skeet shooting, and you can also take your concealed carry permit class here.
