Landis, North Carolina

Landis, NC

Landis, North Carolina's farming community, was incorporated on March 7, 1901. The Coltrane, Linn, Deal, and Corriher families came together and created the town. The name Landis may have originated from a phrase in a book about the history of Rowan County. It was written, "land is the most important thing." Ancestors of those original families still live here and are brought together through some of the town's oldest traditions.

The town has owned and operated the electrical grid here since 1917. Something that is rarely seen in the 21st century. The town elder's influence is still seen today. D. C. Linn envisioned a central park that would bring the community together. His estate was donated to the town, and in 2021, a committee was formed to get started on the build. The park will be home to the original Landis Depot, the first community fire truck, jail, and post office.

For those looking to spend a day full of activities and nature, The Lake Corriher Wilderness Area has plenty to offer. The over five miles of hiking trails challenge beginners and advanced hikers. If a shorter trek is what you like, walk the 18-hole disc golf course fairways. Spend the day on the lake in a kayak or paddle boat, drop a line in the water, and go for the monster bass, bluegill, and black crappie. Don't forget your NC fishing license. Cabins and campgrounds are available for those looking to spend the night. Make sure you attend one of the events like Campfire Christmas by the Lake.

For a park of another kind, there is Jocko's Mini Golf. Enjoy the challenging course and one of the delicious snow cones. Step inside and test your skill at Amanda's Arcade of Hope. Jocko's is the culmination of the owner's vision of a family-centric entertainment center that would be safe, clean, and fun-filled.

If moving your feet makes you happy, take a class at Dance Dreams Studio. School-aged programs include ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and more. Learn how to tumble in the gymnastics class, and competitive gymnastics is available for the more advanced students. If you're already a dancer, see if you have what it takes to join the competitive dance team. The studio has won over 1500 awards.

With so much physical activity in town, a healthy appetite will follow. For the best authentic Mexican fare, there is Taqueria La Unica. The menu is hand-crafted with signature dishes like Chilaquiles Mexicanos, the Super Chimichanga Dinner, and Pollo Fundido. The fried ice cream stands out among desserts.

Make sure your food has settled in if you pass by Corriher Lipe Middle School. A 1940s boiler accident killed Larry, the janitor. Late-working teachers claim to hear the sounds of small children and an old man moaning. Ghosts have been reported in the gym and opening and closing doors.
