Longview, NC

Is it Longview or Long View, North Carolina? In 1907, the original town charter incorporated the name Long View, but today the one-word version is commonly used. Legend has it that developer Sam D. Campbell was in front of his home and looked down the Southern Railway track in Hickory's direction, and said, "It's a long view," and that's the name that stuck. Before then, the town was referred to as Penelope.

Since the town's incorporation, it has been linked with neighboring Hickory and, in the 1980s, took steps to forge its own identity. The town already had fire and police departments, aldermen, and a town hall, but it wasn't until a town seal was adopted that residents felt the town was their own.

One of the year's highlights is the Annual May Day Festival. Enjoy food and crafts from the best local vendors while enjoying live entertainment. There are amusement rides, a bounce house, train rides, and more for the kids, and some popular cartoon characters' appearances. For the adults, spend some time in the Beer & Wine Garden. No May Day celebration would be complete without dancing around the maypole. Admission is free, so grab your lawn chairs and find a prime spot.

Residents are encouraged to use The Long View Recreation Center for enjoyment throughout the year. Along with outdoor basketball and tennis courts, there is a children's playground and open fields where soccer and football can be played. There is a wonderful gazebo that can be used for barbeques and parties. For larger groups, reservations are required for the fields and gazebo.

The area where The Club at Longview Golf Club is located dates back to the 1800s when it was called The Longview Black Jack Farm. Starting in 1953, the Graham family began purchasing the land attached to the farm, and when all was said and done, they had acquired over 1,000 acres. In 2001, the family's vision of the club became clear. When viewing the sprawling property, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus said, "It's as if it was always meant to be the home of a great golf course." On October 20, 2003, the Club and the Longview community opened. Today, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course reflects the Golden Bear's attention to detail with rolling hills, elevation changes, and challenging water features. The facility is more than just golf. Members and guests can also enjoy the outdoor pool, take a tennis lesson, or get a massage. The food here is a wonderful experience, from finger food to fine dining.

After a great round of golf, reward yourself with a chargrilled ribeye, fried caramel cheesecake, and specialty brews at Amos Howards Restaurant & Brew Pub.
