Lowell

Lowell, North Carolina

Lowell, NC

The area began in 1848 as a settlement centered around the newly-built Woodlawn Mill and was incorporated in 1879. Hoping to become a booming textile center like Lowell, Massachusetts, the town of Lowell, North Carolina, took the same name.  Today, Lowell ranks as the 4th best place to live in Gaston County.  As a suburb of Charlotte, there is an attractive blend of entertainment, food, and outdoor activities.

The George Poston Park & Pump Track is a mountain bike lover's dream. Thirteen miles of trails take you through the park, around the lake and river, and up over Spencer Mountain. For daredevils, you'll find some of the biggest jumps in the Piedmont area. The trail area has been designated National Recreation Trail. The park is also home to the first asphalt pump track in North Carolina. Riders do their best to use the momentum the swoops and banked turns create to navigate the 10,000-square-foot track with as little pedaling as possible. Our track is so good it was chosen to host a Red Bull Pump Track World Championship qualifier.

Bring the day inside or keep it outside at the Schiele Museum. Enjoy permanent exhibits like the Hall of North Carolina Natural History, the Hall of North American Wildlife, and the Catawba Indian Village. Some exhibits rotate, so check and see which feature is now open. Some of those include Block Party 2.0, Cats Untamed, and Dinosafari. Outdoor exhibits include the Memorial Wildlife Garden, Stone Age Heritage Site, and the all-new, interactive Farm.

You can spend a day on wheels at Kate's Skating Rink. The Rink has been a Lowell institution since 1961 when owners John and Kate Grice opened the doors. Their grandchildren now carry on the family tradition. You can take skate lessons or join competitive speed or artistic teams. If you're looking for a little more action, Kate's is home to the Gastonia Junior Roller Derby Team.

Start your day off right, grab lunch, or catch the live entertainment at Fryeday Coffee Roasters. The shop roasts small batches of top-quality beans for a great flavor. Coffee beans are imported from many countries, including Mexican, Panama Natural, and Tanzanian Peaberry. Besides music, events include open mic night, art shows, storytellers, and Santa Claus may even make an appearance.

There is nothing like sweets to put a smile on our faces, and there is none better than Sugarlicious Dessert and Coffee Bar. While you can order custom cakes, the place specializes in cheesecakes, cookies, and cupcakes. Stop by for a four-layer peanut butter cake, Cherry lemon sundrop cupcakes, or pumpkin cheesecake.

A family-fun day is on the calendar at Adventure Landing. Mini-Golf, batting cages, and the twenty-nine arcade games are sure to please. Join the club and receive discounts.
