Maiden, North Carolina

Maiden, NC

The small town of Maiden, North Carolina, prides itself on being a close-knit Southern community and business-friendly, with safe streets and year-round events. Even though it is located in North Carolina's foothills, residents are not too far from the beach, airport, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Named after Maiden Creek, the origin of the creek's name is debated, with one side claiming it was named after the bushy Maiden Cane, which grew throughout the area, and the other side claiming it was named after some maiden ladies who lived along its banks. One sure thing is that the settlers here came with a purpose, to open a cotton mill and become the trading center. The two most important things in Maiden have been textiles and football, and the town has dubbed itself the "Biggest Little Football Town In The World"

One of the year's highlights is the Maiden Parks and Recreation Fall Festival. Kids enjoy a day of face painting, hayrides, a bounce house, and many other rides. Residents compete to see who has the best skills in pumpkin carving, chili cooking, at the tractor pull, and overall talent at the beauty contest. Local vendors show off their best work and whip up some of the finest fair food in the county.

Skydive Central North Carolina is your place if you prefer flying to fishing. Even if you've never jumped out of a plane before, you can experience a tandem jump with one of the United States Parachute Association certified instructors. After some instruction, you'll board the plane and climb to over 10,000 feet. Once jumping altitude is reached, you can hit the air and freefall for forty seconds at about 120 mph. About halfway down, the parachute comes out, and for almost seven minutes, you can enjoy the slow ride down and take in the beautiful scenery.
