Mountain View, NC

With a name like Mountain View, you might have lofty expectations regarding the vistas around this small town in Catawba County, and those expectations would be more than justified. As its name suggests, this quiet, tranquil place is a visual stunner. It’s nestled into the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metro Area, but views of those nearby cities are not the focal point. Mountain View, of course, is surrounded by an incredible array of mountains.

From the graceful foothills of the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains to the majesty of Baker, Lynn, and Brendle Mountains, to name a few, the vibrant natural beauty encompassing this modest 4.6 square mile hamlet is breathtaking. But if you are one of the 3,500+ residents lucky enough to call Mountain View home, we’re guessing you already know. However, there is much more to the allure of this place than just those awe-inspiring peaks. An abundance of other wonderful attractions surrounds you.

If you like museums, there are some excellent ones to explore. Check out the Catawba Science Center and the Hickory Museum of Art. Airplane enthusiasts love the Hickory Aviation Museum. Located at the airport, it’s a hidden gem with an excellent collection of planes to see, and best of all, it’s free.

Naturally, there are countless parks around Mountain View. Bakers Mountain Park is the perfect place to go for a hike. Riverbend Park offers an assortment of water activities along the Catawba River. Mountain Creek Park has terrific biking trails, a children’s playground, pickleball courts, and a fishing pier.

When craving some thrills, check out Appalachian Outdoor Adventures, where you can take a guided tour by ATV through the Smokey Mountains. Animal lovers should flock to Tiger World, an endangered wildlife preserve like none other.

After those adventures, you might be craving some good food. If you can’t imagine a day without coffee, take the bus. That’s Taproot, and yes, it’s a mobile coffee shop that serves up some of the finest joe in the world from a real bus. For a superb fine dining experience, Vintage House doesn’t disappoint, and make sure you save room for their incredible homemade desserts. Or, for a casual dinner with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and mouthwatering seafood, head to Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar, where every visit feels like a day at the beach.

Next, end your evening with a show at the Hickory Community Theater, but be warned. You might be in for some ghostly entertainment as well. The theater is very old and famously haunted. Creepy encounters abound and are reported by both visitors and staff alike. From the prankster ghost that roams the balcony to the legendary woman in white who likes to appear on stage, the spectral activity here is off the EMF meter.

Mountain View residents experience other kinds of spooky encounters, too, but they aren’t hauntings. They’re pests. There’s a solution, though, and that’s where we come in.
