Pineville

Indian Trade Route to Growing City
Pineville, officially named in 1873 for the towering pine trees throughout the community, is a city with an abundant history. Known under the former name of Morrow's Turnout, Pineville was originally located at the intersection of two major Indian trading routes. Pineville was brought into the being during the beginning of the modern era in 1852, when it became a stop on the Charlotte & Columbia Railroad. It has since continued to grow and thrive. Its population today is more than double what it was in 2000.

Fun for People and Pets
Whether you’re looking for something free or willing to shell out a few bucks, there is something for everyone in Pineville. Rockin’ & Reelin’ offers free concerts and family movies on Fridays, from June through September, in Pineville Lake Park. The park is a great place to visit during the day, where you can spend a few hours relaxing by the lake, as well as enjoying the walking trails and spacious playground. In 2017, the city also added the two-acre Canine Commons Dog Park. If you’re looking for a place to socialize and play with your furry friend, this is it. Unlike the rest of the park, your dog can be off-leash and run free inside the dog park, so he can enjoy the fresh air just as much as the rest of your family.

A Presidential Town
Pineville is the birthplace of 11th U.S. President James K. Polk, and the city is also home to his state historic site. Admission is free for individuals, Tuesday through Saturday, with the exception of special event days. Much of the site was recreated to represent what the Polk farm probably looked like in the late 1700s to early 1800s and was based on eyewitness accounts. You can experience guided tours through historic cabins, and museum exhibits about Polk’s childhood and eventual rise to the president, and an 18th and 19th-century cemetery where Polk’s grandmother is buried. Many other activities and educational opportunities are also offered. The James K. Polk State Historic Site even offers classes like Cross Stitch Sampler, Historic Aprons, and Hand-Woven Baskets, at affordable prices, taught by historic re-enactors.
