Pittsburg

Pittsburg, North Carolina

Pittsburg, NC

North Carolina is a state of countless tiny, rural communities. You might be inclined to assume that most of them are the same, but you’d be wrong if you did. Many are, in fact, unique, with a special vibe, including Pittsburg, a community in Scotch Irish Township in Rowan County with (yup, you guessed it) strong German, Scotch, and Irish roots. Some of the township’s earliest settlers came from Pennsylvania, so it is not hard to imagine why the name “Pittsburg” is a bit familiar. It’s a baby sister city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Scotch Irish Township has less than 2,000 inhabitants, and Pittsburg is only a fraction of that. But little or not, there is much to see and do around town. Rowan County has a wealth of interesting and intriguing entertainment with more than a little something for everyone.

If you are looking for outdoor recreation, you’ll find many wonderful parks nearby. Grab the kids and head to Riverpark at Cooleemee Falls in Woodleaf, the perfect place to splash around and cool off on a hot day. Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury is another terrific afternoon spot, featuring a lake, campground, picnic areas, carousel, train, animal habitats, and much more. And if you like to hike, you’ll love Dunns Mountain Nature and Historical Preserve. The trails are easy, and the views are spectacular at this hidden gem.

If you want to shop, the specialty stores around Pittsburg are phenomenal. Don’t miss the Salisbury Emporium, an old, historic train depot now chock full of antiques and unusual gifts. And make sure you stop by Fuller’s Market, an old-timey general store with many local items and an irresistible, hand-dipped ice cream counter.

Foodies have their pick of terrific restaurants around Pittsburg. Check out Waters Edge Dock & Grill overlooking picturesque High Rock Lake in Salisbury for a great meal combined with a gorgeous view. Or, for some out-of-this-world barbecue, head to the Smoke Pit Restaurant. And when only something sweet will do, it has to be Country Donutz, a sugary mecca if ever there was one.

As the evening hours approach, you’ll find some exciting nightlife just outside your Pittsburg doorstep. Catch a show at the Lee Street Theater. See a film at the Gem Theater, a discount movie house that’s become a landmark institution in Kannapolis. Grab a craft brew or two at Morgan Ridge Brewery. Last but not least, end your night with the Salisbury Ghost Walk, a paranormal experience that delves deep into the haunted history of the local area.
