Thomasville, NC

In 1922, Thomasville Furniture set the standard for "go big or go home" for generations to come when they built the largest Duncan Phyfe armchair in the world. Originally made from wood, the chair stands 30 feet tall and has a ten-foot by a ten-foot square seat. In 1951, the chair was rebuilt out of concrete and steel and set on a granite base and has since been used by beauty queens, mayors, and governors. Lyndon Johnson sat in the chair during his campaign for Vice President in 1960. Bigger chairs have since been built, but Thomasville residents hold true to their version of the "World's Largest Chair."

Following the big tradition is the Thomasville Emporium Antique Mall. There are 18,000 square feet of odd shops, handmade goods, collectibles, and of course, antiques. The facility hosts many events and donates to local causes. The Emporium is located on the "Vintage Block, but it is more like a few blocks and includes shops like P & G Antiques, Refined & Co, and Vintage R & R.

After a day of shopping, some fresh air may be called for. Head over to Lake Thom-A-Lex Park and bring your fishing pole. There is boat access, and you can also go for a keeper on a kayak or canoe. Largemouth bass and black and white crappie are popular catches. There is no swimming, though. Kids love the playground because of the rock and beanstalk climbing, fishing bridge, and the twenty-foot high spinning slide. There is also a 2-mile walking trail.

If you prefer to be under the water instead of on top of it, the Blue Stone Dive Resort is the place for you. Take your scuba certification class before plunging into the former rock quarry. There are many man-made features, including bass, paddlefish, koi, and freshwater jellyfish. There are many packages available, and the staff is friendly and well-trained.

Diving can surely work up an appetite, and you'll want to take care of your hunger at the Copper Still Taproom. Restaurant Guru ranks the taproom as the #1 bar out of 41 options. The food is great, and live entertainment fills the nights. There are many events, such as whiskey tastings, karaoke, and paint-and-sip nights.

Those looking for a hair-raising experience can be found at Scream Dreams Indoor Haunted Attraction. There are more than 50 hallways and rooms of heart-stopping terror. Located in an old, abandoned, 23,000 square-foot furniture factory (of course), make sure to bring your running shoes. Whether it is the hunter trying to make you his next trophy, demons, or terrifying clowns, there are thrills around every turn. If you prefer to be the scarer, you can join the hordes.
