The picturesque hamlet of White Pines is an upscale community in Cherryville, North Carolina, and a small but sparkling jewel in the northwest corner of Gaston County. Cherryville was once known as White Pines, but its name was changed in 1865 to reference the abundance of fruit trees that once decorated the town’s landscape.

White Pines Plaza is a premier shopping mall in the heart of Cherryville where you’ll find many great local retailers, and it is far from your only source of entertainment. However, the name “White Pines” is still intrinsically linked to the town and is much more than just a residential neighborhood. Gaston County is a treasure trove of wonderful attractions worthy of your time. Here are some of the best.

True to its name, Dallas Lavender Lane Farm is awash in a sea of over 5,000 lavender plants. But you’ll find much more here than just fragrant blooms. It’s a terrific place to spend a few hours with the family. They have pygmy goats, potbelly pigs, and miniature ponies vying for your attention, and the farm is home to many different festivals, classes, and tours. They offer a wide variety of handmade lavender-themed products, and you won’t want to leave without trying a pink lemonade lavender slushie.

The Schiele Museum of Natural History is a phenomenal place to learn more about the rich history and natural wonders that abound in our state. The museum’s James H. Lynn Planetarium offers views that are literally out of this world! 

For some water-themed recreation, head to Lineberger Park. With fountains, a pool, a splash pad, and even a lazy river, it’s a great place to cool off on a hot summer day. If you want some spills and thrills with your water adventure, make the quick trip to Whitewater Center in bordering Mecklenburg County. From rafting to rock climbing to an endless roster of exciting events, there’s something fun here for everyone throughout the year.

A whole lot is brewing in Gaston County of the gastronomic variety, too. Fantastic breweries and restaurants surround the White Pines area. The five-star-rated Cavendish Brewery in Gastonia is an absolute must with the best porter in town. But don’t stop there; make it a tour. Grab a pint of legendary Pineapple IPA at Traust Brewing, and you won’t want to skip Ass Clown Brewing, either. (Hey, with a name like that and the slogan, “Drink one, don’t be one,” how could you resist?) Meanwhile, Vickie’s Restaurant is the best-kept secret in Cherryville for classic homestyle cooking, and the pizza at Caputo’s just can’t be beaten.

Lastly, end your day at Hounds Drive-In Theatre, a classic drive-in movie theatre in King's Mountain, with first-run movies, great pricing, and terrific food. The locals rave about their burgers and say there is nothing like them anywhere else.
