Kings Mountain, North Carolina

Kings Mountain, NC

King's Mountain, North Carolina, a small city once known as White Plains, is located just 30 miles from Charlotte, the most populous city in the state. The town takes its name from a Revolutionary War battle just five miles south, which Thomas Jefferson proclaimed "the turning point of the American Revolution."   Originally a farm settlement in 1870-1872, the installation of the Charlotte-Atlanta Airline Railway sparked the series of events leading to the founding of the City of Kings Mountain just two years later. The farmers there could not foresee repurposing the land for town lots or industrial sites, but men from other parts of the region had other development plans in mind.

The first citizen of Kings Mountain was a man named W.A. Mauney. Besides being the first man to have a house in the city, Mauney also opened the first store, built its first cotton mill, was the first postmaster, and pioneered banking in the area. He was also responsible for many paths and roads that cut through the wilderness, making travel to and from the area much more accessible.

If there is one thing Kings Mountain has plenty of, it's opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. A local favorite is the Gateway Trail, which includes almost five miles of off-road trails, plus over two miles of street-to-sidewalk connections throughout the city's bustling downtown area. The park features an easy .7-mile-long loop of asphalt and gravel on what used to be a quarry railroad and a more difficult 4.5-mile hilly track traversing the quarry property.

Another outdoor favorite you won't want to miss is Crowders Mountain State Park. With not one but two mountain peaks to traverse and split by the border between the Carolinas, this park is known to be a hikers' and birdwatchers' dream, with many different types of birds of prey, songbirds, and other avian residents.

Local lovers of theater have a good reason to get together in Kings Mountain to see the plays, shows, and other special events by the Kings Mountain Little Theater. In December, the theater is in full swing, putting on several holiday-themed shows in time for St. Nick to show up. Every month brings new talent and exciting performances for long-time fans and new theatergoers. Become a patron and choose from the five membership levels to enjoy the perks. If you're in town and want to take in a live show, the KMLT is the place to do it.
