McAdenville, North Carolina

McAdenville, NC

Like most of the towns in the area, McAdenville, North Carolina, dates back to the late 1800s. Named after Rufus Yancey McAden, he was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons and Speaker of the House in 1866. The Historic District here is one of the larger ones with ninety-three buildings. Here you can find examples of Italianate and Late Victorian architecture. Parts of the first three McAden Mills remain. In 1884, Thomas Edison came to McAdenville to install the South's first electric generator, making McAden Mills the first mill in the South with electric lights.

Although steeped in history, the residents enjoy the best amenities in the area. Blue Heron Adventures offers kayak tours. The South Fork - McAdenville to Cramerton excursion takes kayakers through a slow-flowing section of the Catawba River. The area is renowned for its beauty, and you can choose a round-trip tour or get picked up by the shuttle. Once you return, please stop by The Boathouse, and choose from one of our six draft beers or purchase your own kayak.

To get your fill of nature on dry land, the South Fork Trail is part of the Carolina Thread Trail. Native Americans and local settlers first used the two-mile historic trail. The trail is also part of the Butterfly Highway. The project is building a network of native plants and flowers to support bees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that count on nectar and pollen.

One event you can't miss here is Christmas Town USA. During the holiday season, our small town is paid a visit by an estimated 600,000 people. The tradition that started in 1956 as some red, white, and green lights decorating trees at the McAdenville Community Center now includes nearly every house and shop in town. The celebration has gained national exposure with television features, including Good Morning America and magazines like Southern Living. A fun time is to be had at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and residents participate in one of the town's oldest traditions, the Yule Log Parade.

If the Christmas celebration leaves you hungry, give Terra Mia Ristorante and Bar Italiano a try. Order an appetizer of Italian Tagliare Charcuterie followed by an authentic dish of Linguine Del Pescatore, Veal Al Pomodoro, or Pappardelle Del Contadino. For dessert, sip on an espresso while enjoying a Bomboloni Crema Chantilly or a cannoli.

One of the feel-good spots to dine here is the Spruced Goose Station. The restaurant employs persons with intellectual developmental disabilities in an integrated environment. Stop by for breakfast or grab Pharr Club or Cherub classic for lunch.
