As far back as 1700, inhabitants around Jamestown, North Carolina, have been progressive thinkers. The first to settle here, the Keyauwee Indians, had a small village that was vulnerable to attack. Jamestown was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and many residents played a role in freeing enslaved people. Those values are on display at the Mendenhall Homeplace. James Mendenhall was one of the original settlers in the area, and in 1816, the village was officially named after him. Take a tour of 19th-century buildings such as the Richard Mendenhall House, the Madison Lindsay House, and James Mendenhall Bank Barn, the oldest Pennsylvania-style bank barn in the State. You can also see one of the most historic remnants of the times, the Stanley-Murrow False-Bottom Wagon, which was used to help countless enslaved people make it to freedom.

Imagine coming across a castle while taking in the sites. That’s what you’ll see at Castle McCulloch Gold Mill. Built by Charles McCulloch and finished in 1832, the castle was built with locally quarried granite. It has a working drawbridge, a seventy-foot tower, and a moat. Also built was the Cornish Rock Engine House, which used cutting-edge technology of the times, steam engine-powered crushers, to refine gold ore. The castle was restored in the 1980s and is now used as an event venue.

You can spend a relaxing day outdoors at High Point City Lake Park, less than a mile from Jamestown. Families take to the park because many amenities center around the kids. Take a ride on the carousel or train, play a round of mini-golf, or watch the kids on the playground. You can fish from the bank or from your boat. Water lovers can rent pedal boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and more. Maybe a good old-fashioned picnic is on the menu.
