Mosquito Control

There are over 3,000 different mosquito species worldwide, and scientists are still discovering new ones. Historically, they have been called different names depending upon what country they're found in. The Spanish called them "musketas,' the French, "Les moucherons," and the Germans, "Stechmucken." In 300 BC, Aristotle called them an "empis." The name we use today was first used around 1583, probably originating in North America.

They can ruin backyard picnics; they aren't there to eat the food but to eat you. We do a good job of attracting them at get-togethers as a study has shown that alcohol consumption will make us more attractive to them. In fact, our age, size, and health also play a part in our attraction to the fiend.  They breed in stagnant water, found in places like birdbaths, clogged drains, gutters, and kiddie pools. The female lays approximately 200 eggs on top of the water in different sites to increase their hatching chances. It takes only ten days for an egg to mature into an adult mosquito. Adults then live for about two weeks, and they do a lot of damage during their short lifetime.

They have long been considered the deadliest animal on the planet, with over a million deaths attributed to them annually. Here are some serious diseases that can be transmitted by a mosquito bite:

  • West Nile Virus
  • Zika Virus
  • Yellow Fever
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis
  • Dog Heartworms
  • Dengue Fever
  • Malaria

Some of these mosquito-borne diseases have little to no symptoms, while others cause fever, fatigue, brain swelling, or affects your nervous system. In recent years, the Zika Virus has caused great public concern mostly because it causes infants' congenital disabilities. During the summer months, pregnant women are often advised to stay away from places known to host mosquitoes.

Only the female bites, typically in the early morning or just before the sun sets in the evening, depending on the species. Scientists are baffled as to why over the years, the female mosquito, particularly the Aedes aegypti, show a preference for human blood rather than blood from other mammals. This species does not travel very far during its lifetime, so an infestation should be dealt with quickly. They are aggressive attackers, usually biting around the ankles or arms. Because of this, the disease-carrying mosquitoes can infect a large number of people.
